The study conducted by Jalan Universiti, Malaysia, and the Bangladesh Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (BCSIR), Bangladesh, investigated a sustainable approach for treating landfill leachate using green-synthesized nanomaterials. Landfill leachate contains high levels of organic matter and toxic pollutants, posing serious environmental risks and requiring effective treatment solutions.
This study explored the green synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) using durian husk extract as a natural reducing and stabilizing agent, thereby valorizing agricultural waste. The synthesis was performed under mild conditions without harmful chemicals. The resulting nanoparticles were characterized using multiple analytical techniques to assess their morphology, structure, purity, and optical properties. The CuO NPs were mainly spherical, with sizes ranging from 35 to 50 nm, and showed high crystallinity and purity.
Photocatalytic tests demonstrated that the green-synthesized CuO NPs achieved up to 79% reduction in chemical oxygen demand in landfill leachate. These findings indicate that durian husk–derived CuO nanoparticles have strong potential as an eco-friendly and effective material for wastewater treatment and sustainable solid waste management.
