Mexican mango growers target new international markets

CONASPROMANGO, founded in 1992, represents Mexico’s mango production sector across 12 states. The organisation highlights that Mexico has nearly 54,000 mango producers, about 70% of whom are smallholders with less than five hectares. Guerrero alone accounts for 9,000 producers and 16% of the national total.

In 2024, Mexico planted more than 207,000 hectares of mangoes and harvested about 196,000 hectares, producing over 2.15 million tons. Guerrero contributed significantly, harvesting more than 27,000 hectares and producing over 411,000 tons.

According to CONASPROMANGO, small mango growers face challenges related to productivity, market access, and limited integration along the value chain. The organisation stresses the need for integrated regional development, stronger research and development, improved phytosanitary control, food safety, efficiency, and value addition.

It also highlights the importance of better coordination between public and private institutions and calls for wider adoption of sustainability certifications. These steps are seen as essential to meeting rising global demand for responsibly produced mangoes and strengthening the competitiveness of Mexico’s mango sector.
