Fama ready to buy excess durian amid surplus

Malaysian durian growers facing surplus harvests have been urged to sell excess produce to the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) to stabilise prices and avoid market gluts. Bumper harvests in Pahang and Johor since mid-last month have pushed prices of premium varieties such as Musang King, D24 and Duri Hitam down to RM10–RM15 per kilogram.
Fama chairman Aminuddin Zulkipli said the agency is ready to absorb surplus durians and process them into products like durian paste and tempoyak, with at least one processing facility in every state. He noted that price pressure is mainly affecting Grade C durians, while Grade A prices remain relatively stable.
Aminuddin stressed that intervention mechanisms are already in place to prevent unsold durians at farm level. Although increased production and a growing number of growers have driven the current glut, overall demand for durians remains strong. He added that, as durians are highly perishable, efficient supply and quality management are essential to maintaining a stable market ecosystem.
