China’s citrus production has expanded steadily over the past decade, reaching about 67.9 million metric tons in 2024, according to the USDA’s Citrus Annual report. The country has shifted from a net importer to a significant regional exporter, with markets now extending beyond Southeast Asia and Russia to Europe, notably the Netherlands and Romania. Strong domestic demand for sweet, seedless, easy-to-peel varieties continues to drive growth, though rising labor costs and limited land may slow expansion.
Orange production in 2025/26 is forecast at 7.68 million metric tons, slightly higher year on year, with stable imports and modestly rising exports. Mandarin and tangerine production is projected at 27.1 million metric tons, supported by favorable weather, while exports have more than doubled since 2021/22 and are expected to grow further. Imports of mandarins are also rising, led by Australia and South Africa.
Grapefruit and pomelo production is forecast to edge up to 5.35 million metric tons. Pomelo imports have surged, mainly from Laos, benefiting from seasonal complementarity and trade agreements. Overall, China’s citrus sector continues to strengthen its domestic base while expanding export reach.
