Thai mangosteen prices double as imports fall

Thai mangosteen prices in Vietnam have surged to a record VND250,000 per kilogram, about double last year’s level, due to severe supply shortages. Fruit vendors and importers report that imports from Thailand are at their lowest in years, with sellers able to source only small quantities compared to previous seasons. The shortage is attributed to unfavorable weather affecting Thai production and disruptions to cross-border shipments caused by tensions between Thailand and Cambodia.
Customs data confirm a recent decline in agricultural imports from Thailand. Despite the high prices, consumer demand in Vietnam remains strong because local mangosteen supplies ended earlier than usual. Vietnam’s domestic mangosteen season typically runs from May to August, and once local fruit ran out, imported fruits dominated the market, pushing prices sharply higher.
Thailand remains the world’s largest mangosteen exporter, producing about 408,000 tons annually, with around 90% exported. China is the largest buyer, followed by Vietnam and other Asian markets, intensifying competition for limited supply and further driving up prices.
