4,000 containers pineapples target

Malaysia plans to increase pineapple exports from 3,789 containers in 2025 to 4,000 containers this year as part of efforts to reduce its trade deficit and strengthen agrofood exports. Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Chan Foong Hin said the agrofood and food and beverage sectors contribute 11.4% of Malaysia’s GDP, but imports still exceed exports, prompting the government to focus on export growth.
To support this goal, the ministry will promote local fruit consumption during Chinese New Year and work with farmers on festive packaging. Chan also said the government will propose expanding the role of the Malaysia Pineapple Industry Board to include durians and coconuts, further boosting agricultural exports.
Beyond fruit, the ministry aims to grow the fisheries sector by increasing aquaculture’s share to 40% by 2030 to reduce pressure on wild fish stocks. It is also working to restore pork self-sufficiency to 90% after African Swine Fever reduced it significantly.
These measures reflect Malaysia’s broader strategy to strengthen food security, increase export value, and balance agricultural trade.
