Indonesia is seeking to expand agricultural trade with Canada by promoting exports of tropical fruits following the signing of the Indonesia–Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (ICA-CEPA). The Ministry of Trade sees strong potential in horticulture, highlighting fruits such as mango, young mango, jackfruit, dragon fruit, and salak as promising exports to the Canadian market.
According to the ministry, Indonesia’s tropical produce complements Canada’s agricultural strengths, as Canada can supply fruits like apples, grapes, and kiwis that cannot grow in Indonesia. This complementarity creates opportunities for mutually beneficial trade, especially as ICA-CEPA is expected to provide low or zero tariffs for products not produced domestically in Canada.
Although Indonesia already exports tropical fruits to various countries, Canada remains a largely untapped market. Officials aim to leverage the agreement to expand Indonesia’s presence there. Canada has expressed strong interest in strengthening agricultural and agrifood cooperation, demonstrated by the establishment of the Indo-Pacific Agriculture and Agrifood Office and Canada’s significant agrifood exports to Indonesia, which exceeded USD 1.2 billion in 2024.
