Chiang Rai’s Wiang Kaen pomelo registered as ninth GI product

January 19, 2026 | The Nation |

Thailand has registered “Wiang Kaen pomelo,” a signature fruit from Chiang Rai’s Ngao River basin, as the province’s ninth geographical indication (GI) product, according to the Department of Intellectual Property. This makes Chiang Rai the province with the second-highest number of GI products nationwide, after Nakhon Ratchasima. Previously registered GI products in the province generate over THB300 million annually.

Wiang Kaen pomelo is grown in four tambons of Wiang Kaen district, where fertile alluvial soil, good drainage and favourable climate contribute to its distinctive flavor, texture and juiciness. The GI covers three varieties—Khao Yai, Thong Dee and Seller—all meeting sweetness standards of at least 9 degrees Brix.

Currently, 1,383 households produce about 25,130 tons of Wiang Kaen pomelo each year, with a total market value exceeding THB100 million, including roughly THB50 million in exports, mainly to China. Authorities say GI registration protects product identity, raises agricultural value and farmer incomes, and strengthens the local economy. The government plans to support quality control, traceability, marketing, e-commerce sales and export promotion to ensure long-term, sustainable benefits from GI recognition.
