Pineapples feel the pinch

The ongoing conflict in Iran is disrupting Malaysian pineapple exports to the Middle East by affecting shipping routes and increasing logistics costs. While demand remains stable, exporters are facing operational challenges such as delays, higher insurance fees, rerouted vessels, and shipment cancellations, leading to additional costs and losses.
Fresh pineapple exports are particularly vulnerable due to their reliance on fast, reliable cold-chain logistics, with delays risking product quality. In contrast, processed pineapple products like juice, canned, and dried pineapple are less affected due to longer shelf life and greater flexibility.
Despite these disruptions, the Middle East remains a key and premium market for Malaysian pineapples, especially the popular MD2 variety. The Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (LPNM) is working to improve supply coordination, strengthen logistics, and diversify export markets to enhance resilience. Overall, the long-term outlook remains positive due to strong global demand and Malaysia’s good reputation.
