Thai ministry to confront 20 firms over coconut price crisis

Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce plans emergency talks with major firms to address falling aromatic coconut prices, blamed on foreign middlemen suppressing farmer incomes. Authorities are also investigating illegal “nominee” businesses and strengthening regulations.
At the same time, the government is promoting a shift toward high-value, certified organic coconut products for export to Europe and the United States. By focusing on processing and value addition, officials aim to reduce dependence on volatile raw fruit markets.
The strategy includes upgrading local entrepreneurs’ export capabilities and using successful industry models to improve competitiveness and protect farmers’ livelihoods.
