Heat stress causes scalding, fruit drop in mango orchards

April 17, 2026 | Times of India|

Mango growers in Goa are facing a challenging season due to unusual fruit spotting and reduced yields, largely caused by environmental stress. Experts attribute the symptoms—discolored, depressed patches on fruit—to intense sunlight exposure (sunburn) rather than pests or disease. These damaged areas may later become vulnerable to fungal infections such as anthracnose.

Farmers are also experiencing multiple production issues, including poor flowering, low fruit set, premature fruit drop, and reduced harvests. High temperatures have worsened these conditions, leading to significant crop losses.

Authorities advise close monitoring of orchards, especially fruits exposed to strong sunlight. Growers warn that continued climate-related stress could have long-term impacts on mango cultivation in the region.
