Mangosteens now more expensive than durians in Malaysia because of supply shortages

April 16, 2026 | The Straits Times |

A rare price reversal is occurring in the fruit market, with mangosteens becoming more expensive than durians due to limited supply. Reduced mangosteen production is linked to farming changes, as growers increasingly remove mangosteen trees to prioritize durian cultivation, which offers higher returns.

Meanwhile, durian prices have dropped sharply due to oversupply during the current mini harvest season, with some varieties seeing price declines of up to 80%. This has boosted consumer demand for durians.

As a result, mangosteens—often imported due to local shortages—are now priced higher than durians, highlighting how shifts in farming practices and seasonal supply can significantly impact fruit markets.
