Uganda has launched its first export of processed pineapples to China, marking a significant step toward agricultural value addition and industrialization. The shipment was produced by Deshiburg Company, which recently established the country’s first dedicated canned pineapple factory with a processing capacity of 500 tons per day.
The project is expected to create stable markets for pineapple farmers, generate jobs, reduce post-harvest losses, and strengthen Uganda’s export competitiveness. Officials emphasized the importance of “intentional farming,” encouraging farmers to produce according to market demand and quality standards.
The company plans further investment in a large agricultural industrial park integrating production, processing, logistics, and research. Overall, the initiative represents Uganda’s shift from exporting raw commodities toward higher-value processed agricultural products for global markets.
