Mango growers in samal urged to protect bees for pollination

May 19, 2026 | PAGEONE |

Mango growers in Samal, Philippines, are being encouraged to protect pollinating bees, which are considered essential for improving mango yield, fruit quality, and sweetness. Experts highlighted the important role of native Asiatic honey bees in pollination, noting that effective pollination can significantly increase fruit production.

Farmers were advised to reduce pesticide spraying during flowering periods to avoid harming pollinators. A new research project will study how pollination affects mango flavor and explore bee conservation strategies.

At the same time, efforts are underway to expand export opportunities, with South Korea showing interest in Samal mangoes. To access international markets, growers must meet strict pesticide residue standards and maintain high fruit quality.
