Attapeu province in Laos has approved six companies to develop over 528 hectares of durian plantations under 30-year concessions. The project aims to convert degraded land into productive agricultural areas, create jobs, and strengthen export-oriented farming.
Authorities selected durian due to its strong market demand and high commercial value. The initiative is also linked to broader environmental goals, including forest restoration and sustainable land management. Officials believe combining commercial agriculture with reforestation efforts can improve local livelihoods, restore soil quality, and support climate targets.
The project forms part of a larger provincial campaign to rehabilitate degraded forests and expand tree planting in 2026.
