Cambodian Longan Farmers Set to Benefit from China Export Deal

Cambodia and China signed an SPS protocol for dried longans, expanding market access and export opportunities for Cambodian growers. The agreement, reached between Cambodia’s Ministry of Agriculture and China’s General Administration of Customs, also included a memorandum of understanding on plant and livestock quarantine and food safety cooperation.

The protocol is expected to help address key challenges facing Cambodia’s longan industry, including oversupply and price fluctuations. By enabling exports of dried longans, which have a longer shelf life and higher value than fresh fruit, the agreement creates new opportunities for processors and exporters.

Officials noted that the deal follows nearly a year of negotiations and aligns with China’s updated food import regulations. Experts believe the agreement will encourage local businesses to improve production capacity, product quality, and compliance with international standards. Improved logistics, including transit arrangements through Laos and direct shipping routes from Sihanoukville Port to China, are also expected to support exports.
