Durian prices fall as imports and summer fruit supply surge in China

Durian prices in China have fallen significantly as imports from Southeast Asia increase, transportation improves, and seasonal supplies rise. Some durians that previously sold for 300–400 yuan each are now available for under 100 yuan, leading consumers to talk about achieving “durian freedom,” meaning affordable access to a once-premium fruit.
At Beijing’s Xinfadi wholesale market, Thai Monthong durians were about 14% cheaper than in early April, while Vietnamese Monthong durians experienced even steeper declines, falling more than 40% from the previous month and over 30% year-on-year. Retailers, including major membership stores, have begun passing these lower prices on to consumers.
The price drop reflects growing durian imports from multiple countries, particularly Vietnam, whose exports to China continue to expand rapidly. Improved cold-chain logistics and distribution networks have also helped reduce costs and increase market efficiency.
The trend is part of a broader decline in premium fruit prices across China as summer harvests increase. Cherry and lychee prices have also fallen due to abundant supply. Despite lower prices, demand remains strong, and sales volumes have increased as durians become more affordable for a larger share of consumers.
