Vietnam’s durian industry is expected to expand further as the country prepares to enter the Indian market and strengthens exports to other key destinations. India is expected to open its market to Vietnamese durians in July, with both countries finalizing technical requirements. Industry experts view India as a promising long-term market due to its large and growing middle- and upper-income population, although processed products such as frozen and dried durian may initially be more suitable than fresh fruit.
Dak Lak Province, Vietnam’s largest durian-producing region, is forecast to harvest more than 500,000 tonnes this year, about 20% higher than in 2025 due to expanded cultivation and improved yields. The province’s harvest season does not overlap with Thailand’s, providing a competitive advantage.
Despite lower domestic prices earlier this year, durian exports remained strong. Export revenue reached US$293 million in the first four months of the year, up 60% year-on-year. China remained the dominant market, while exports also increased to the United States and South Korea.
Industry representatives emphasized the need to strengthen traceability systems, maintain quality standards, promote sustainable production, and invest in processing industries. Expanding into new markets such as India is seen as an important strategy for reducing market risks and supporting long-term growth.
