Malaysia's Melaka to promote Musang King, Black Thorn in push to become durian tourism hub

July 19, 2026 | vnExpress |

Melaka is planning to develop itself as a premier durian tourism destination by establishing a one-stop supermarket featuring premium local varieties such as Musang King, Black Thorn, and Hor Lor. The proposed marketplace would provide orchard owners and traders with a centralized venue to sell high-quality durians while attracting domestic and international tourists.

The initiative comes as Malaysia faces a significant oversupply of durians, causing prices to fall sharply, including for premium varieties. State officials aim to leverage the unusually low prices to attract more visitors, particularly from neighboring Singapore, and boost local tourism and farmer incomes.

The plan complements Malaysia’s broader efforts to expand durian tourism, including the launch of Asia’s first durian experience center and the introduction of orchard-based tourism packages featuring activities such as glamping and jungle trekking. These initiatives seek to diversify revenue sources for the durian industry while promoting Malaysia’s premium durian varieties to international visitors.
