China’s new-season pomelos enter global markets

July 21, 2026 | Fruitnet |

China’s 2026 pomelo export season has commenced with early shipments from Hainan and Yunnan, followed by increased supply from Fujian later in the season. Favorable weather has supported crop development, although reduced orchard investment after last years low prices may decrease late-season production by 20–30%.

The industry is placing greater emphasis on consumer-oriented quality attributes, including sweetness, peel thickness, and consistency, rather than relying solely on fruit size and appearance. Exporters are strengthening partnerships with growers by providing technical support in cultivation, pesticide management, and orchard practices to improve fruit quality and meet international market requirements.

Although export volumes recovered in 2025 following a weather-related decline in 2024, prices remain under pressure, with industry expectations of lower opening prices for the new season. Improved orchard management is expected to help growers maintain competitiveness despite market challenges.

China is also expanding its international presence, particularly in the Middle East, where pomelo exports have grown steadily. Exporters continue to improve supply chain efficiency and logistics planning to address geopolitical disruptions while supporting stable market access and long-term export growth.
