Razat Sultaniya Farm in Oman has successfully established local pineapple production after 15 years of research to evaluate the crop’s suitability under Dhofar’s environmental conditions. Pineapple cultivation has expanded from small-scale potted plants to larger plantings under tree shade and in greenhouses, taking advantage of the region’s moderate temperatures and high humidity during the khareef season.
Several pineapple varieties have been tested, including Queen, Mauritius, and MD-2, with MD-2 becoming the primary variety due to its large fruit size, sweet flavor, and strong market potential. The crop is planted between July and December, with harvest occurring approximately 12 months after planting.
The project also highlights pineapple’s relatively low water requirements compared with other tropical crops, making it suitable for local conditions. In addition, tissue culture propagation has enabled the production of uniform, disease-free seedlings, supporting the farm’s plans to expand pineapple cultivation. The initiative demonstrates the potential for diversifying Oman’s agricultural production through long-term research, adapted cultivation practices, and improved propagation technologies.
