Dragon fruit farming gaining popularity in Jhenidah

In Jhenidah, Bangladesh, commercial dragon fruit farming has gained popularity in recent years due to its profitability. Farmers are turning to dragon fruit cultivation, as it yields significant profits. The success of this endeavor has led to increased interest among growers in the region. To support local farmers, a wholesale dragon fruit market was established in Gourinathpur, Moheshpur upazila, making it the country's first wholesale dragon fruit market. The market, which began operating in July, features around 30 vendors, providing employment opportunities for local youth.
The Jhenidah Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) reported that 842 hectares of land across all six upazilas in the district were dedicated to dragon fruit cultivation in the current year, a substantial increase from previous years. Dragon fruits are being sold at prices ranging from Tk 180 to Tk 200 at the Moheshpur wholesale market, with approximately Tk 1 crore worth of dragon fruits sold daily. Many farmers have found dragon fruit cultivation to be more profitable than other crops, leading to higher incomes
