This study conducted by the National Research and Innovation Agency, Indonesia reviewed the conservation and management of tropical fruit genetic resources in Indonesia. As a megadiverse tropical country, Indonesia possesses extensive fruit diversity that provides important genetic resources for crop improvement, research, and food security. Ex situ conservation through experimental fields, botanical gardens, and commercial fruit gardens plays an important role in preserving this diversity.

The study describes the development and significance of the Indonesian Tropical Fruit Gene Bank, which maintains numerous accessions of major and underutilized tropical fruit species. Conservation efforts include bananas, mangoes, mangosteens, durians, salacca, and other fruit trees. These collections preserve genetic diversity and provide materials for research and the development of improved varieties.

The review identifies several challenges to gene bank management, including Indonesia’s extensive biodiversity and remote collection areas, limited funding and infrastructure, conservation of traditional varieties, pests and diseases, climate change, institutional support, and capacity development. At the same time, opportunities exist to expand genetic collections, apply modern conservation technologies, strengthen institutional collaboration, improve training, and develop supportive policies.

The study highlights the Indonesian Tropical Fruit Gene Bank as an important resource for conserving tropical fruit diversity and supporting future breeding, climate adaptation, research, and sustainable agricultural development.
