Vietnam’s durian boom brings opportunity and oversupply fears

August 21, 2026 | Vietnam net |

China has approved 140 growing-area codes and 31 packing-facility codes for durians from Vietnam’s Dak Lak province, supporting expanded exports during the 2026 harvest. The approved growing areas cover more than 14,321 hectares, while packing facilities have a combined capacity of 5,470 tonnes per day. Dak Lak currently has about 45,000 hectares of durian, with production estimated at 500,000 tonnes.

Authorities emphasized that approved growers and facilities must comply with quarantine, food-safety, traceability, and importing-market requirements. Industry representatives also called for stronger controls throughout the production chain, particularly regarding cadmium contamination, post-harvest treatments, agricultural inputs, testing capacity, and growing-area management.

Vietnam’s durian industry has expanded rapidly, with exports reaching US$3.86 billion in 2025. However, this growth has increased concerns about quality management, unsuitable cultivation areas, export disruptions, and potential oversupply. Experts recommend shifting the industry’s focus from further acreage expansion toward quality, food safety, improved varieties, and processing capacity. Greater investment in freezing technology could also extend shelf life, diversify export markets, and reduce risks associated with fresh-fruit exports.
