Farmer’s coconut dehusking invention gets a shot at cracking the durian market

A portable coconut dehusking device developed by Malaysian plantation entrepreneur Che Adnan Che Kadir has received a four-star rating in Kelantan’s 2026 Agricultural Technology Innovation Competition. Judges suggested adapting the device for other crops, particularly durians, because opening durian fruit requires skill and careful handling.
Originally developed in 2024 for use on Che Adnan’s six-hectare coconut farm, the 3.5 kg device was designed to improve worker safety and efficiency. It reduces coconut dehusking time from two to three minutes manually to about one minute, or 40–45 seconds for skilled workers.
Following recognition at the state competition, the invention could represent Kelantan at Malaysia’s National Innovation Week. Further improvements are planned based on recommendations from agricultural and technical experts. Che Adnan hopes to obtain an innovation grant to refine the design, adapt it to different production capacities, and develop a version suitable for durians.
The project aims to transform a practical farm-level solution into a commercially viable Malaysian agricultural technology that can improve safety and productivity for farmers while potentially reaching wider domestic and international markets.
