Fresh durian exports to China see 40-fold growth spike

July 28, 2026 | Khmer Times |

Cambodia’s fresh durian exports to China reached 5,738 tonnes in the first seven months of 2026, nearly 40 times the country’s total export volume in 2025. The increase reflects growing Chinese demand and Cambodia’s efforts to improve agricultural export logistics.

A major development is the launch of Cambodia’s first overland durian shipment to China through Laos. The inaugural shipment carried more than 50 tonnes in three containers. The new land corridor reduces transportation time to approximately five days, compared with 15–20 days by sea, helping maintain fruit freshness, lower logistics costs, and reduce post-harvest losses.

Although recently introduced, the overland route has already handled nearly 10% of Cambodia’s fresh durian exports to China in 2026. Authorities view the route as an important step toward diversifying export logistics and improving access to high-value markets.

The rapid export growth and improved regional connectivity are expected to strengthen Cambodia’s competitiveness in China’s fruit market, encourage investment in the agricultural sector, and create greater opportunities for farmers, producers, and exporters.
