This study conducted by the University of Karachi, Pakistan reviewed the effects of climate change on the growth and production of fruit crops, with particular attention to Pakistan. Fruit production is increasingly affected by rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns, water scarcity, soil degradation, and other environmental stresses. These challenges are particularly important in developing agricultural regions where production systems may have limited capacity to adapt.
The researchers reviewed information from published and electronic sources to assess how global warming and changing environmental conditions influence commercially important fruit crops. The review indicates that climate change affects soil physical properties, water availability, precipitation patterns, root development, soil porosity, and the availability of macro- and micronutrients. These changes can reduce suitable cultivation areas and negatively influence fruit crop growth, productivity, and quality.
The study identifies climate change as an increasing constraint on fruit production in Pakistan and highlights the vulnerability of several locally important fruit crops. It also emphasizes the need for adaptation measures to maintain agricultural productivity under changing conditions. The authors suggest that improved farming practices, research and development, new agricultural technologies, and stronger environmental management could help growers adapt to climate-related stresses and support the continued production of high-quality fruit crops.
