A Malaysian durian shipment successfully reached Dalian, China, after a 12-day sea journey while maintaining freshness, demonstrating the potential of controlled atmosphere (CA) technology for ocean transport. The two-tonne shipment was Hernan Corp’s third trial following two years of testing transportation conditions and cold-chain solutions.

The shipment used a Daikin CA container that combines refrigeration with controlled oxygen and carbon dioxide levels. By slowing the fruit’s respiration and ripening, the system helps preserve tree-ripened durians during longer journeys.

The successful trial could provide Malaysian durian exporters with a lower-cost alternative to air freight, particularly for larger shipment volumes. Longer remaining shelf life could also give distributors and retailers greater flexibility, while reduced reliance on air cargo may lower carbon emissions.

The development comes as Malaysia’s durian industry faces concerns over oversupply, falling prices, and high export logistics costs. Although further improvements are needed, Hernan Corp believes successful sea transportation could help Malaysian producers reach a broader Chinese market and provide new opportunities for the industry.
