A research collaboration between the Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board and Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) has developed two new pineapple-based products through a board-funded research and development programme.
The first product, Biosurfaktan Lestari, is an organic bio-detergent base made from pineapple waste as an alternative to synthetic surfactants. Developed over one year, it demonstrated stable pH, effective cleaning performance, and good foaming properties.
The second product, Pinebiotic Pineapple Strip, is a fruit leather snack made with 90% MD2 pineapple puree. It is designed as a healthier snack option while supporting digestive health and is being prepared for commercialization.
Both products were launched at the Malaysia Agriculture, Horticulture and Agrotourism Exhibition (Maha) 2026. The research was conducted under the Pineapple Product Research and Innovation Study Programme of the 12th Malaysia Plan, which received RM4 million for 2021–2025. The programme supported 10 R&D studies and aimed to develop five new products while facilitating technology transfer to entrepreneurs.
The Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board plans to continue collaborating with research institutions, government agencies, and private companies to improve the commercial potential of local pineapple-based products.
