Fruit at the forefront of a trade and diplomatic push

Taiwan is expanding its fruit exports to Europe and other international markets to reduce dependence on China. In June 2026, Taiwanese Irwin mangoes and black-leaf lychees entered the United Kingdom for the first time, while mangoes also reached France, where more than four tonnes sold out within a month despite premium prices.
These developments followed years of negotiations to meet European import regulations. The European Union approved Taiwanese mangoes and guavas in 2025, followed by lychees and dragon fruit in 2026. Taiwan also began exporting pineapples to New Zealand in 2025 after prolonged bilateral negotiations.
Improvements in cold-chain logistics have supported Taiwan’s export expansion by maintaining fruit quality during international transportation. Government investment in processing facilities, refrigeration infrastructure, and compliance with overseas quarantine requirements has also contributed to market access.
However, exporters face challenges involving transportation disruptions, regulatory compliance, and commercial sustainability. Establishing reliable supply chains and securing repeat orders will be important for maintaining Taiwan’s presence in European markets.
