Phl opens Canada market for durian, mangosteen

September 24, 2026 | Daily Tribune |

The Philippines is expanding its tropical fruit export markets with trial shipments of fresh durian and mangosteen to Canada, supporting government efforts to diversify agricultural exports and increase income opportunities for local growers.

The initial shipment to Vancouver included 300 kg of durian and 120 kg of mangosteen for Canadian buyer Fresh Makers Ltd. A second shipment to Toronto, scheduled for September 24, contained an additional 300 kg of durian and 200 kg of mangosteen. Together, the shipments totaled 920 kg and were transported by Philippine Airlines.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. stated that the initiative forms part of the government's strategy to establish new overseas markets for high-value agricultural products and support rural development. The Department of Agriculture is also seeking to expand exports of cacao, coffee, and okra.

The Canadian shipments follow the successful completion of three air cargo shipments of fresh durian to France, where weekly deliveries are continuing.

The export expansion comes as the Philippines seeks to address its agricultural trade deficit, which has exceeded USD 11 billion annually since 2022.
