Conducted by IFAPA Centro, Spain, this study addresses the water-intensive nature of avocado (Persea americana Mill.) cultivation, especially pertinent in water-deficient regions. In response to growing water scarcity, particularly in arid and semi-arid avocado-producing zones, the study reviews deficit irrigation as a sustainable strategy to combat climate change impacts. Focusing on the subtropical Mediterranean climate, where avocado orchards thrive, the research explores deficit irrigation's role in enhancing efficiency, conserving water, and optimizing overall agricultural benefits. Emphasizing the need for resilience in avocado farming amidst water shortages, the study advocates for sustainable irrigation programs that balance reduced water consumption with minimal impact on yield and fruit quality. The insights gained provide valuable considerations for avocado growers facing challenges of water scarcity, climatic uncertainties, and the increasing demand for environmentally conscious produce.
