The U.S. ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, stated that Mexican avocados grown on illegal orchards should not be exported to the United States, emphasizing consequences for such actions. Michoacan Governor Alfredo Ramirez highlighted the issue of deforestation, with 817 illegal avocado orchards identified. Plans are underway to include environmental guidelines in the export protocol, linking to initiatives like the Forest Guardian. Mexico, the largest avocado exporter globally, sends 2.5 million metric tons abroad, with the United States as a significant importer. Avocado popularity has fueled illegal deforestation in Michoacan, despite its ideal conditions for cultivation. Climate Rights International warns of environmental impacts and supports Salazar's stance, hoping for effective regulation to protect local forests and communities.
