Early mango season in Maharashtra, prices drop
March 23, 2024 | The Live Nagpur |
The mango season in Maharashtra kicked off early due to a surplus in Konkan orchards, leading to lower prices for Hapus mangoes. With abundant fruit production, a dozen mangoes now cost Rs 800-1,000, considered average. Sindhudurg Hapus dominates the market, followed by Ratnagiri and Raigad varieties. Favorable weather in Karnataka and early harvesting contributed to the surplus, causing mango prices to drop significantly, with Karnataka mangoes selling for Rs 200-300 per dozen in Pune’s wholesale market. Other varieties like Lalbaugh and Payari also saw price reductions amidst the increased supply. Despite initial concerns over December rains, farmers are pleasantly surprised by the early and bountiful harvest.
