Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua established a task force to address issues affecting Kenya's avocado sector following disagreements over tax regulations. The task force, comprising stakeholders, aims to propose solutions within 30 days. Challenges include low avocado prices despite rising demand, attributed to middlemen control. Avocado farmer Jeremiah Ng’ang’a highlighted obstacles like immature harvesting and poor post-harvest handling. Cooperatives CS Simon Chelugui emphasized challenges such as market access, high freight costs, and regulatory hurdles. Christine Chesaro from the Horticulture Crops Directorate noted Kenya's significant horticultural export earnings, with avocados playing a pivotal role. Efforts are underway to enhance production in non-traditional regions and address regulatory barriers to boost competitiveness in global markets.
