Chanthaburi lauded in fruit export deal
March 26, 2024 | Bangkok Post |
The Commerce Ministry is boosting Chanthaburi's fruit exports to China, particularly durian and mangosteen, through advance contracts valued over 3 billion baht. This initiative, supported by an MoU between Thai-Chinese associations, aims to stabilize prices, increase farmers' income, and enhance Thai fruit quality. Chanthaburi, a major tropical fruit hub, produces durian, rambutan, mangosteen, and more. Contracts covering 20,000 tonnes of durian and mangosteen ensure quality for Chinese buyers. Durian prices, especially for "Monthong" variety, have surged due to the season's start. The ministry aids durian exports via various Chinese checkpoints. In 2023, Thailand's fruit exports totaled 238 billion baht, with durian and mangosteen dominating, mainly to China. The ministry's trade offices in China facilitate these exports. The 2024 harvest season anticipates a 4.92% increase in fruit production, led by durian and mangosteen. The Department of Internal Trade implements 22 measures to manage fruit supply and ensure export quality.
