Disease affecting avocado growth impacts Florida farmers

 Greening Disease has devastated the citrus industry, and now Laurel Wilt is posing a threat to avocado trees in Florida. Over 140,000 avocado trees have succumbed to the fungal infection, resulting in approximately $46 million in losses. With limited methods to combat the fungus, such as fungicide application and pruning, farmers are turning to innovative solutions like using dogs trained to detect the scent of infected trees. Despite being difficult to visually identify, the distinct odor of the fungus makes it detectable by these specially trained dogs. Laurel Wilt's impact on avocado production underscores the urgent need for effective strategies to mitigate its spread and protect avocado orchards from further devastation.
