Thai Finance Ministry aims to increase mangosteen, longan prices

July 26, 2024 | The Thaiger |

The Finance Ministry of Thailand plans to support the purchase of mangosteens and longans at the beginning of the season, running from July to August 2024, to stabilize early-season fruit prices. Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira announced that state financial institutions will buy 25,000 kilograms of each fruit, with mangosteens purchased at 30 baht per kilogram and grade A fallen longans at 15 baht per kilogram. This initiative is part of the government's broader strategy to maintain favorable agricultural prices, which includes restructuring production costs and enhancing productivity to remain competitive.

The Internal Trade Department estimates this year's mangosteen production at about 300,000 tonnes, with longan production expected to reach 1.44 million tonnes, primarily supplied by the northern region. The purchased fruits will be resold to the public and employees at prices close to the purchase price, ensuring stability in the market.

In addition to agricultural measures, the Finance Ministry is also focusing on boosting investor confidence through the promotion of the Thai ESG and Vayupak Funds. The Thai ESG Fund has been made more attractive by increasing the tax-deductible investment limit and reducing the required holding period, with the revised fund expected to launch soon.
