About SNZ

The imperative transformation of agricultural and food systems towards intelligence and low carbon emissions is essential for realizing the dual Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of ensuring food security and mitigating the impacts of climate change. The Smart and Net-Zero Project, meticulously crafted within a 4-year framework spanning from 2023 to 2026, has been strategically devised to fortify international collaboration within the Asian Pacific region. Our mission is to promote sustainable agri-food systems that prioritize health, safety, and the attainment of net-zero carbon emissions, achieved through effective knowledge management, extensive information sharing, and the development of international networks.

Key Thematic Topics:

Our project centers around key thematic areas, each playing a crucial role in realizing our vision:

  • Reducing GHG Emissions: Methods that curb greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural production and food systems.
  • Increasing Carbon Sink: Methods that enhance carbon sequestration in agricultural soils (yellow carbon), forest/ grassland/ wetland (green carbon) and coastal ecosystem (blue carbon) and thus aiding in the fight against climate change.
  • Leveraging ICT for Sustainable Agrifood Systems: The integration of information and communication technology to promote sustainability within agriculture and food systems
  • GHG Emission Measurements, Carbon Pricing, and Offset Mechanisms: The development of tools and mechanisms for emissions measurement, carbon pricing implementation, and the establishment of offset mechanisms within sustainable agrifood systems.
  • Incentive-based approach for GHG emission reduction: Strategies and policies to incentivize emission reductions within sustainable agrifood systems.

Our Activities:

  • Establishing an Information Platform: Creating an information hub dedicated to collecting and disseminating the latest developments related to our thematic areas. This platform serves as a valuable resource for all stakeholders.
  • Forming an International Consortium: Bringing together experts and stakeholders from diverse backgrounds to facilitate knowledge sharing, exchange experiences, and explore collaborative opportunities.
  • Organizing International Workshops: Convene international workshops in (conferences, forum, round table and field trip) in Asia-Pacific countries, providing a platform for in-depth discussions on emerging issues and fostering innovative solutions.

Funding and Implementation:

The Ministry of Agriculture in Taiwan (ROC) is our funding partner. Implementation of this vital initiative is overseen by the Food and Fertilizer Technology Center for the Asian and Pacific Region (FFTC). Additionally, we are honored to engage experts from governments, private sectors, research institutes, and universities, ensuring a rich tapestry of knowledge and expertise.

Join us on this transformative journey towards a smarter, low-carbon future for agriculture and food systems. Together, we can make a substantial impact on food security and climate change mitigation, paving the way for a more sustainable world. (2023.09.25)
