Comprehensive biochar carbon removal guide revealed

July 09, 2024 | Carbon credits

Hamerkop and the International Biochar Initiative (IBI) have released "A Manual for Biochar Carbon Removal," targeting biochar producers, investors, and stakeholders. This guide compares certification standards, offers practical project design advice, and outlines costs to clarify biochar’s role in carbon removal.

Biochar, created by pyrolyzing organic matter, sequesters carbon effectively, locking it away for centuries and preventing greenhouse gas emissions. The manual covers biochar’s role in the voluntary carbon market, detailing various certification standards like Puro.earth, Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), and Climate Action Reserve (CAR), and provides a cost comparison of these standards.

The guide aims to simplify the certification process, promote industry growth, and enhance biochar’s role in mitigating climate change. With the biochar industry projected to expand significantly, this manual supports stakeholders in navigating certification and maximizing biochar’s carbon removal potential.
