Japan looks to farms in 'advanced decarbonization areas'

August 12, 2024 | the japan times |

Japan's government has designated numerous municipalities as "advanced decarbonization areas," aiming for net-zero carbon dioxide emissions from households and civilian electricity use by April 2030. As of March 2023, 73 locations across 36 prefectures have been selected, with plans to reach at least 100 by fiscal 2025.

These areas receive grants to support carbon reduction and regional revitalization, with a focus on renewable energy. For example, Kamishihoro in Hokkaido, recognized in fiscal 2022, has implemented a biogas project using livestock manure to generate electricity, and plans a 2,000-kilowatt solar power system. Similarly, Kitagawa in Kochi Prefecture, designated in fiscal 2023, will introduce small-scale hydroelectric power and a solar-sharing project on yuzu farms to address local challenges and promote sustainability.

The central government offers up to ¥5 billion ($34 million) per area to foster these initiatives, which align with Japan's broader goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
