In the context of global efforts to combat climate change and achieve net-zero emissions, understanding and managing the role of our ocean and coastal ecosystems is crucial. The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, in collaboration with the Australian Bureau of Statistics, has introduced the first edition of the National Ocean Account. This initiative aims to enhance our grasp of how coastal ecosystems such as mangroves and seagrasses contribute to carbon sequestration and overall environmental health.

This report provides initial estimates on the extent, condition, and carbon stocks of these critical ecosystems, with additional information on saltmarshes and kelp forthcoming. By adhering to the United Nations' environmental-economic accounting standards, the National Ocean Account supports Australia's commitment to sustainable ocean management and climate action. It also aligns with Australia’s participation in the High-Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy, highlighting the need for comprehensive data to guide effective policies and manage ecosystems in the face of climate change. The discussion paper not only reflects on the development of the account but also seeks feedback to refine its methodology and enhance its utility in addressing both local and global environmental challenges.
