Japan plans offshore blue carbon study to explore CO2 capture & storage
May 21, 2025 | Carbon Herald |
Japan has initiated an offshore blue carbon research project to explore carbon capture and storage through marine vegetation, including kelp and mangroves. The Environment Ministry, Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, and Eneos Corp. will collaborate to study CO2 sequestration in deep-sea environments and assess environmental impacts. This initiative aims to enhance Japan's strategy for achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. By developing blue carbon technology, Japan plans significant carbon absorption targets: 1 million tons by 2035 and 2 million tons by 2040, supplementing declining forest carbon capture capacities and leveraging the ocean’s natural carbon storage potential.
