Taiwan's first enhanced rock weathering trial succeeds in cutting carbon and improving soil health

October 1, 2025 | Environmental Information Center (In Chinese) |

Taiwan’s first Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) trial—conducted with the Tse-Xin Organic Agriculture Foundation (慈心有機農業發展基金會), NTU Department of Agricultural Chemistry, and Kyoto Prefectural University—shows strong benefits for both soil health and climate mitigation. The trial reports that basalt rock powder combined with organic amendments more than doubled crop yields and increased soil carbon stocks by 20.5%. Researchers also highlight ERW’s potential to address “hidden hunger” by replenishing micronutrients depleted by decades of intensive agriculture. Alongside reductions in soil CO₂ emissions and improved pH balance, the trial positions ERW as a dual-benefit solution for subtropical farming systems. Taiwan’s Ministry of Agriculture is preparing expanded trials and MRV development to assess national-scale deploymen.
