The fertilizer and farming sectors account for roughly 1.3% of global CO2 emissions, with ammonia production alone emitting an estimated 450 million tonnes annually, per a World Fertilizer special report. Producers are cutting energy use in the Haber-Bosch process through advanced reforming and new catalysts, while shifting toward larger-scale carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) and green ammonia. Nutrien's Redwater, Canada plant captures roughly 300,000 tonnes of CO2 per year via CCS, and CF Industries and Japan's JERA are building a US$4 billion blue-ammonia plant in Louisiana, due online in 2029. Policy is reinforcing this shift: the EU's RED III mandates 42% renewable hydrogen in fertilizer production by 2030, Canada targets 2050 net zero for agriculture, and China aims to cut agricultural nitrogen emissions up to 48% by 2060. Fertilizers Europe's roadmap estimates full decarbonization will need hundreds of billions of dollars in CCS infrastructure over the next 25 years.
