Scaling up sustainable rice straw management requires coordinated technologies and markets

IRRI argues that farmers burn straw not simply by choice, but because of limited machinery, wet fields, transport difficulties, and weak market demand. Therefore, scaling alternatives requires more than bans on burning or new machinery. Rice straw must become a valuable resource for products such as animal feed, compost, and biochar. The key is to build a complete value chain—from collection and transport to processing and markets—so that avoiding burning becomes economically practical for farmers.
