From waste to resource: how livestock manure can help to close Europe's nutrient loop
Sources of information

Livestock manure could become part of Europe’s answer to rising fertilizer costs and import dependence. The EU-funded FertiCovery project is exploring how to recover nutrients from manure, biowaste, and wastewater and turn them into bio-based fertilizers. After screening more than 150 technologies, the project selected 25 promising nutrient recovery value chains for further assessment. By recycling nutrients back into farmland, these solutions could reduce greenhouse gas emissions, replace part of mineral fertilizer use, improve soil health, and strengthen Europe’s agricultural resilience.
