Taiwan's Fisheries Research Institute and the National Applied Research Laboratories have successfully cultivated large seaweed in the country's offshore wind farm areas, marking progress in the Ministry of Agriculture's "Key Strategic Action Plan for Natural Carbon Sinks." The collaboration aims to use the spaces between wind turbine piles as offshore seaweed farms, providing economic benefits for fishermen and contributing to green energy, carbon sequestration, and fisheries resource conservation. Despite challenges, including the difficulty of obtaining wild algae sources and adverse conditions, the recent cultivation of seaweed demonstrates potential for triple benefits—economic, carbon sequestration, and fisheries conservation. This innovative approach could leverage wind farm spaces to boost local economies and contribute to sustainable development.
