The gridded EPA U.S. methane greenhouse gas inventory (gridded methane GHGI) provides detailed maps of annual methane emissions across the contiguous United States (CONUS) with high spatial and temporal resolution. These emissions are categorized into over 25 source categories, including agriculture, petroleum and natural gas systems, coal mining, and waste.
To create this dataset, national annual methane emissions from the U.S. EPA Inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks (U.S. GHGI) are allocated to a 0.1° x 0.1° grid over the CONUS using various spatial and temporal proxy datasets at state, county, and grid levels. Monthly scaling factors are also provided for categories with significant temporal variability.
Researchers can utilize this dataset to compare national-level emissions with more localized observations of atmospheric methane, aiding in better understanding regional and local emission patterns.
