Microsoft buys carbon removal credits from Grassroots Carbon
February 08, 2024 | Carbon credits |
Microsoft has made its first investment in carbon credits from regeneratively managed grasslands by partnering with Grassroots Carbon. These soil carbon drawdown credits support regenerative ranching practices over a 30-year period. Grasslands, with their deep-rooted vegetation, are crucial carbon storage reservoirs, constituting 34% of total carbon in the U.S. Great Plains region. Grassroots Carbon's CEO, Brad Tipper, highlighted the importance of soil carbon storage and the benefits it brings to soil health and ecosystem resilience. The collaboration aims to change conventional land management practices by incentivizing regenerative practices and contributing to Microsoft's carbon removal strategy. While the financial details remain undisclosed, this partnership underscores a shift towards prioritizing soil carbon storage in climate strategies.
